Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump uses its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s sent back through your home. This liquid is housed within the coils of your home’s cooling system, but one of the most typical refrigerants used for many, many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being gradually eliminated because of environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, the production of R-22 will end all together. Introducing R-410A R-410A is EPA-recognized, chlorine-free and ozone-friendly. That means it’ll keep your AC running cool without hurting the environment. Even better news, Lennox’s most efficient systems are made to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system function efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for durability, quiet operation and enhanced dehumidification, so you’re sure to stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Airtronic Heating & Cooling in Redford, our cooling products can work with R-410A. If your system was installed before 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is scarce. Some manufacturers offer alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
